Philip woke with a start. He remembered instantly where he was, which was exactly where he shouldn’t be.
“How long was I asleep?” he whispered. The candles looked to have burned lower, but there was still only darkness outside the small window.
Ejoler was sitting up beside him, turning a cloth over in his hands. “Only an hour. No more than that.”
Philip let himself relax. He realized that he had been cleaned up, even though the sheets were still damp beneath him. “What’s Widow Bellamy going to think?”
Ejoler frowned down at him. “Who?”
“The old lady who does the laundry.” Ejoler was still frowning and Philip shrugged. “I’m just glad it’s not Lily. She’s been so understanding, but I wouldn’t want to have to explain this.”
“You care so much about the opinions of people in this village?”
Philip sat up a little, pulling the blankets up with him. It was chilly in the room when he wasn’t touching Ejoler. “I probably worry too much about what people think all the time. But Lily’s worth it. She’s a good friend. And” — he leaned in — “it’s not so bad in this village, this valley, is it? I mean, this is where we met.”
“I intend to leave this place,” Ejoler said flatly. “And never come back.”
Philip moved back to his side of the bed. “Oh.”
Ejoler relented a little, his voice sounding almost apologetic. “I have certain obligations. Family obligations.”
Philip felt something cold settle in his stomach. “You’re married.”
Ejoler’s lip curled. “Hardly.” But the sneer faded almost as soon as it began. “But these obligations may take me from this valley soon.”
“I understand. I mean not the vague parts.” Philip folded and unfolded the sheet with his hands. “But I knew this couldn’t last.”
Ejoler covered Philip’s anxious hands with one of his own. “You’re braver than I am, then. If I had known how this — you — would make me feel...”
He looked up quickly. “You don’t regret it? You’re not sorry that we started this?”
“No,” Ejoler said firmly. “I am not sorry at all, but I had no idea something so brief could mean so much.” He looked suddenly lost, which was shocking on one usually so certain. “How am I supposed to leave you?”
“Not yet.” Philip held on to him tightly. “Not yet.”
